Designer Handbag Brands You Need to Know

The female population in the U.S. makes up approximately 50.5 percent of the total population. In other words, there are a little over 166 million girls, teens, and women in America. At some point in their lives, virtually every single one of them will own a handbag.

Given that more than half of all kids tote around a smartphone by age 11, it’s a practical concern even in childhood. Of course, handbags aren’t just about practicality, they’re also about style and prestige.

By the time you get to adulthood, there are at least a few designer handbag brands you should know about. Let’s explore those brands.

Prada

While not the oldest of the fashion houses that produce designer handbags, Prada launched in Milan with leather goods in the early 20th century. Since then, it has become one of the most globally recognizable brands in luxury handbags and fashion accessories.

With over a century of production behind it, Prada has produced many iconic bags. Some of the most iconic and timeless bags include the Cahier, Belle, and Deux.

Louis Vuitton

Perhaps it should come as no surprise that Louis Vuitton is on the list. Founded in the fashion capital of Paris nearly 170 years ago, the brand got its start in trunks. While the company has expanded into a wide range of products, including clothing, accessories, and even jewelry, it’s still known best for its trunks and luxury purses.

Two of the most recognizable Louis Vuitton bags are the Speedy and Neverfull lines.

Hermès

No collection of luxury handbag producers is complete with a mention of Hermès. Another luxury brand that got its start in Paris, Hermès had humble beginnings as a producer of leather harnesses for carriages.

Now, the company makes its mark with handmade leather bags like its Kelly bag or Birkin bag.

Givenchy

One of the younger companies on the list, Givenchy got its start back in the 1950s as an actual fashion brand. Based in Paris, the company slowly expanded out into other areas, including perfumes and handbags, such as the Kelly and Antigone bags.

If these bags feel like your kind of fashion, you can grab your Givenchy bag now.

Gucci

While damaged by behind-the-scenes family feuding in the 1980s, Gucci has restored its image as a luxury brand to be reconned with since then. While handbags are only one area of Gucci’s offerings, the Horsebit and Diana bags remain fashion touchstones.

Designer Handbag Brands and You

Picking between designer handbag brands is almost as difficult as picking between different bags. If you prefer Italian fashion sensibilities, though, Prada and Gucci should remain your go-to choices for luxury handbags.

If you find yourself drawn to a more continental sensibility, though, you’ll want to turn your eye to offerings of Givenchy, Hermès, and Louis Vuitton. The good news is that, no matter what brand you pick, you’ll end up with a fantastic handbag.
