When visiting most countries you need to apply for a visa. It’s normal as the country you’re visiting wants to know you have the funds to afford your stay, who you are, whether they want you in the country, and how to contact you if there are any issues.
In short, if you want a visa you should be prepared to provide a lot of personal information. You’ll find the process is much simpler if you use a good immigration lawyer in Sydney.
The Diversity Visa Program
Visa applications tend to require proof of funding. Specifically you need to be able to prove you can afford to get to a country, leave, and cover your living costs while you’re there. However, this isn’t always financially possible. The Diversity Visa program is a US initiative as they are dedicated to attracting the best talent and offering a fair visa program.
That’s why, in 1990 the government created the Immigration Act which created the Diversity Visa program.
In essence, a set number of visas were created and allocated in a lottery-type arrangement. All you have to do is apply to the program and they will enter your application into a draw. Every year a set number of applicants are drawn from the Diversity program and offered visas.
A Targeted Approach
You have no control over the process. The aim of the diversity program is to increase diversification in the US. Although it is described as a lottery it is not completely random. At the moment preference is given to applications from countries that have low immigration rates to the US.
In other words, the aim is to ensure the UIS has people living together in harmony from across the globe.
Every year, approximately 50,000 diversity visas are granted. That sounds like a lot but the average level of applicants to this program is 8 million per year. In short, a very small percentage of applicants get one of these coverted visas.
The majority of visas are issued to African countries with Asian countries growing steadily. There have been over 1.2 million diversity visas granted since 1995.
Why The US Offers A Diversity Program
Acquiring a visa allows you to live and work in the US. It potentially gives you access to an array of markets and opportunities that you wouldn’t otherwise be able to. It gives you the opportunity to live the American dream.
But, it also encourages diversity within the US. This is good for the economy and a small step toward global unity. Of course, it also increases the workforce in the US, helping to keep the number of people living and working in the US as high as possible. In a world where birth rates are falling, this is an important part of surviving.
It’s worth noting that the diversity visa is frequently targeted by legislators who wish to get rid of it. So far they have not been successful. But, if you think a diversity visa could benefit you, it’s better to apply sooner rather than later.
