What is an i/o error?

An input/output error pops up when the external storage device or hardware has encountered troubles. Because of this the files and data of the storage device cannot be accessed by the operating system of the computer.

How to rectify i/o device error?

The following are the various ways through which the i/o error can be treated so as to save the files in the storage device and to prevent them from being permanently lost.

General methods
Restarting the computer.
Updating all the drivers and software needed to access the external storage device.
If the operating system being used is windows make sure that the device manager has no faults.
If the computer is moved recently make sure all the ports and wire are connected well.

If the i/o error doesn’t resolve with general methods, here are more methods which you could try to rectify the error:

If the removable storage device you’re using, for example: USB drive, hard drive, CD-R, etc; try another disk. If the other disk can be read without any errors popping up then that would mean the previous disk was a bad disk or a dirty disk.

Make sure that the external device is not write protected. (Write protected refers to the fact that the device files cannot be edited in any way)
If your motive is to burn on a CD-R make sure that you’re operating a new disc.
If the CD-R is closed(full) then no new information can be burnt(written) in it.
Make sure that the appropriate permissions are granted to operate the external storage devices in your system.
If using a device over a network connection, make sure that the connection is secure by trying to read or edit other files.
Check all the cords before commencing operation. You need to make sure that the cords are appropriately placed in their correct ports.
If the cable doesn’t work even after appropriate connections, replace it with a new cable.
If the software of your system is outdated, update it or delete the software and reinstall the current version of the software.
Open the command prompt and make use of the ‘chkdsk/fx’ command, in which the letter x is to be replaced by the letter of the dive that you want to access. After this type ‘exit’ following this press enter.
