Vanilla Extract

When it comes to the majority of baking recipes, vanilla extract is usually a staple. It gives the end product a sweet flavour that is needed for most baked good desserts. The good news is that if you are all out of this essential ingredient, there are several vanilla extract substitutes that can be used in its place. Some of them include; almond extract, maple syrup, brandy or rum, and vanilla powder or vanilla essence. They all do the same job as vanilla extract and create that sweetness needed in dessert recipes. If you do want to stick to vanilla extract and are set to use no other ingredient as a substitute, then it is possible to make it from scratch at home. You only need two ingredients to make it, which is simple enough. It does, however, require a lot of time and patience waiting for the vanilla beans and alcohol to diffuse together. This can take up to a month, so make it in advance as it isn’t a last-minute job!

Olive Oil

No kitchen is complete without a long bottle of olive oil, or two. It is a staple and essential item that is used in everyday cooking, whether that be frying or oven baking. It also added extra flavour to dishes and can be used as a garnish for salads and other foods. If you find yourself all out, then just grab a handful of olives and some hot water. These are the only two ingredients needed to make the good stuff.
