Is It Good To Boil Water For Drinking?

Everyone knows that the boing water kills the germs in it. Boiling water has long been known as the best way to get contaminant-free water. But is it really safe to drink? Is it harmful to our health or not? These are the question which will be answered in this post.

Why Boil Water? 

It is a commonly said phrase that, If you don’t have a safe water supply, you should boil it before using it. US Centre for Disease Control stated: “Except for boiling, few of the water treatment methods are 100% effective in removing all pathogens.”

Most of the persons don’t think about the quality of the water they drink. They just turn on a tap, fill the glass with water and drink it. But how much water you should consume every day? Is the water you’re consuming is safe? What should you do to clean this water which is contaminated?

Safe water is the biggest necessity and concern for all of us. There are two types of threats in drinking contaminated water:

  1. Organic contamination: bacteria, protozoa, viruses. Boiling water for drinking can eliminate these contaminants. Stop before believing, they aren’t really eliminated, they just die. By using boiled water, you will end up digesting them but they won’t harm you if the water is boiled properly.
  2. Toxic contamination: chemical contamination such as herbicides and pesticide, chemical spills and pollution. No amount of boiling will remove these harmful chemicals. The only solution is to filter the water or choosing another water source.

Purifying your drinking water by boiling it is a pretty easy process. But while it might seem simple, this method of boiling water for drinking kills many of the microorganisms that cause illness like cryptosporidium and giardia. Cryptosporidium is resistant to disinfection and so it is extremely necessary to kill it via boiling.

Drawbacks of Boiling Water for Drinking

While boiling water may clean water by removing bacteria, there are some drawbacks to the technique.

  • Water has to be boiled for at least one minute
  • Boiling does make sure all bacteria are killed
  • Boiling can only remove bacteria and solids. Bacteria body remains in the water. Moreover, the boiling technique will not remove other harmful chemicals.
  • For some contaminants like sulfur and lead, boiling serves to focus lead rather than boiling it off.
  • Chlorine also remains in water because its boiling point is higher than water.


Boiling water makes it pure and safe to drink if it has some type of biological contamination. You can kill off bacteria and other harmful contaminants in a batch of water simply by boiling it. Other types of chemicals, such as lead and chlorine, are not so easily filtered out.

Before treating water which comes from rivers, lakes or streams contains a variety of bacteria, harmful organisms, and viruses. According to, it is unsafe and unable to drink. You know some type of bacteria and organisms are harmful to your stomach and they can cause other digestive and health problems such as diaries and vomiting.

Boiling water for drinking is the most common and cheapest method of purification when you don’t have access to purify and safe more ware. Many organisms and bacteria can’t survive when water reaches 212o Fahrenheit. But boiling is not a method which is meant to use on a long term basis. This is only suitable when you are going outdoors and don’t have other filtration methods. You must install a water filtration system to avoid fatigue and tension.
