Why does Water need To Be Purified?

How water purifiers actually work?

  1. Physical filtration: As water passes through a membrane or screen, large suspended particles are caught and filtered out. This process depends on the size of the pores of the membrane. For example, particles(mostly viruses) as small as of 0.0001 to 0.0005 microns can be removed by nano filtration. Physical filtration can also be performed through Reverse Osmosis where water is generally pushed through a membrane with high pressure. Due to this, the membrane blocks the suspended particles. Reverse osmosis is the facility provided by most of the industrial RO plant manufacturer.
  2. Chemical filtration: In this process, water is passed through filters made of active materials. This removes impurities chemically. This process uses chemicals and adds them to water in order to kill microorganisms. Chemicals used are chlorine and other reducing agents.
  3. Disinfection: In this process, clean water is disinfected by adding mild chemicals to kill any remaining microorganisms.

Types of water purifiers

On the basis of water purification methods, water purifiers can be classified into the following models:

  • Reverse Osmosis(RO): This type of water purifier uses a semipermeable membrane through which water is passed with very high pressure. The water pump is used to create high pressure. This process removes dissolved solids like Arsenic, Fluoride, Lead, Chlorine, Nitrates, and Sulfates. This type of purifier is most useful to purify hard, saltwater having dissolved salts and chemicals. RO water purifier is of 2 types:
  • Wall-mounted/Tabletop RO water purifier
  • Under-Sink/ Under-Counter RO water purifier

RO water purifier is widely used because it removes dissolved solids, metals, and chemicals. Remove waterborne microorganisms capable of causing diseases; improves the taste and odor of water. This technique is affordable, safe, and easy to maintain.

  • Ultraviolet(UV) Water Purifier: This purifier has a UV lamp tube. Water is passed through this tube for purification. Running water is exposed to UV light which inactivates germs and bacteria by killing them. This type of purifier is perfect for TDS i.e., Total Dissolved Solids water of lakes and rivers. UV water purifiers can’t purify hard water with a high TDS level. This water purifier does not use any chemicals, has a low maintenance cost, has a high purification rate, low energy consumption, and doesn’t remove essential minerals.
  • Ultra filtration(UF) Water Purifier: This type of water purifier use hollow fibers of a membrane. This membrane is capable of separating water from other particles. Once the water is passed through the UF membrane, suspended solids get trapped in the layer. As this technology can not trap minute particles, thus it is ideal for water with low contamination and does not purify hard water. It only removes suspended solids and does not remove dissolved chemicals that are harmful. The advantages of this technology are that it works without electricity, work in low pressure does not use chemicals, efficiently filter muddy water, and have extended lifetime.
  • Sediment Filter: This is a pre-filter technique and is used along with other water purifiers. This technique makes use of sediment filter which catches unwanted dust, mud particles which are generally collected as sediment. These sediment filters are made of cotton, polyester fibers. This method removes dirt, mud, and any visible pollutants. It protects RO, UV purifiers by getting damaged as it removes sand particles. Sediment filter does not remove dissolved solids, heavy metals, and microorganisms.

Due to highly degrading water quality, water purifiers have become an essential need for today’s lifestyle. Waterborne diseases can be very harmful and sometimes fatal too.
