Prophylactic mastectomy: The surgery to reduce the risk of breast cancer

The recovery from a mastectomy differs from person to person. One of the reasons for this is that not all mastectomies are created equal. Both breasts are surgically removed in a double astectomy, although there are many forms of surgery:

  1. Mastectomy with skin-sparing or nipple-sparing techniques – The breast tissue is cut, but most
of the skin is retained, as well as the nipple and areola on occasion.
  2. Simple or total mastectomy – The breast, areola, nipple, and much of the overlying skin are all
removed during the procedure. It’s also possible to cut sentinel lymph nodes.
  3. Radical mastectomy – The entire breast, areola, nipple, skin, chest muscles, and lymph nodes
under the arm are removed. Nowadays, doctors hardly perform this procedure.
  4. Radical mastectomy with modifications – The breast, areola, nipple, and much of the overlying skin are all removed during the procedure. Both the lining of the chest muscles and portions of the muscle itself are affected. Axillary lymph nodes are also removed under the arm.

The procedure

Steps before the surgery

● Keeping an intravenous line in position.
● To make the insertion of a breathing tube easier, sedative medications are given orally to the patient.
● The breathing tube is placed.
● Anesthesia is given to the patient.
● Surgical site disinfection.

Double mastectomy – During a double mastectomy, both breasts are removed at the same time. This technique can be used to treat or prevent cancer. In most cases, a double mastectomy is the same as a total mastectomy. The only difference is that both of your breasts are affected. This surgery takes around 2-3 hours.

Step 1 – Surgical incision in the breast or breasts at the position of a tumor or invasive ductal carcinoma
Step 2 – The intercellular tissue is retracted.
Step 3 – Resection of a tumor as well as some normal tissue
Step 4 – Drainage is created.
Step 5 – Closure of the wound surgically

Also, Double mastectomy cost or prophylactic mastectomy cost varies from one country to the other and depends on several factors, including the experience of the surgeon, the facilities for post-operative treatment, the patient’s accommodation, as well as the food and lodging for those accompanying the patient, the type of hospital, and the total duration of hospital stay still the expected cost is still very low and affordable

After the surgery, one of the most critical steps patients to take is to avoid cigarettes, herbal tea, and
other blood thinners. The patient must spend at least one night in the hospital. The patient will resume regular activities, including sports, after a month.

How much does a prophylactic mastectomy eliminate breast cancer risk?
  1. Prophylactic mastectomy decreases the risk of breast cancer by 90 to 95 percent in women who have the BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation.
  2. Prophylactic mastectomy will minimize the risk of developing cancer in the other breast by 90 to 95 percent in women who have already had breast cancer.
