Important Railway Exams Conducted By RRB

RRB Stands for Railway Recruitment Board earlier known as Railway service commission. It is the government organisation under the Ministry of Railway that is responsible to conduct recruitment examinations to enrol candidates for various posts in Indian Railways.

There are 21 boards functional under RRB i.e. 21 regions in India situated in different parts to manage the appointment of new employees in Indian Railways.

RRB Recruitment is an intensively competitive annual process. Hence, the article aims to abreast candidates with popular RRB exams conducted by the Railway Board. Aspirants of railway exams will know about the details of RRB exams, important exam dates, eligibility and more.

Popular RRB Exams conducted by the Railway Board

The list of important RRB Exams conducted annually by the railway recruitment board goes as under:

  • RRB NTPC Exam
  • RRB Group D Exam
  • RRB ALP Exam
  • RRB JE Exam

The important details regarding the above mentioned are as follows:


  1. The NTPC Exam stands for Non-technical and popular category exam conducted by RRB.
  2. Candidates to appear for the exam must fulfil the following eligibility for NTPC exam. (i)Nationality: Candidates must be nationals of India, Nepal, Bhutan.

(ii) Age limit: Candidates must be between the age group of 18 years to 30 years.

(iii) Education: Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university and for certain posts, should have at least passed the 12th Std.

(iv) Physical Fitness: Candidates should pass certain medical standards as prescribed by the RRB.

  1. The board has announced a total 35277 vacancies for the NTPC exam as per the latest notification released on February 28th, 2019.
  2. The RRB NTPC Exam date is not known yet as the exam conducting agency is not finalised by the board.


  1. The JE exam stands for Junior Engineer exam. RRB conducts JE exam to recruit candidates with science and engineering backgrounds to fill in the various technical posts such as Junior Engineer, Junior Engineer (IT), Depot Material Superintendent (DMS), Chemical and Metallurgical Assistant (CMA).
  2. Candidates to appear for RRB JE exam must be citizens of nationals of India, Nepal, Bhutan. Between the age group of 18 years to 30 years and must have a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from a recognized university.
  3. The last recruitment was for the year 2019 and the board released 13487 vacancies. The notification for 2020 recruitment is still awaited.
  4. The exam is conducted in three stages. The result for RRB JE exam 2019 released on November 1st 2019.


  1. ALP Stands for Assistant loco Pilot. RRB recruits candidates for technicians posts through this exam.
  2. The eligibility for RRB ALP exam requires candidates to be Indian nationals, with minimum and maximum age limit as 18 years and 30 years respectively. The education qualification needed to appear for ALP exam is 10th pass or a diploma in Electrical / Electronics / Mechanical / Automobile Engineering recognized by AICTE.
  3. A total of 64371 vacancies were announced by RRB for the 2018 recruitment. The notification for the year 2019-2020 is still awaited.
  4. The RRB ALP Exam is conducted in three stages and candidates need to qualify in all the exams in order to get selected for the final result.

RRB Group D Exam

  1. RRB Group D exam is also known as RRC Level 1 exam as it is conducted by RRB on behalf of RRC, the Railway Recruitment Cell.
  2. Any citizen of Indian nationals between the age group of 18 to 33 years possessing matriculation i.e. 10 pass certificate is eligible to appear for Group D exam.
  3. The last recruitment was for the year 2019 for which the board released 103769 vacancies for various posts. The notification recruitment for the year 2020 is yet to be announced.
  4. The notification for RRB Group D 2019 was released on February 23rd 2019 and the RRB Group D Exam Date for CBT I was delayed which is still awaited by the candidates who applied for 2019 recruitment of Group D.

Though the RRB exams are conducted for different posts and levels, the recruitment process like the application procedure, downloading of admit cards and checking the result etc. are the same for all the important RRB Examinations.
